Susan Schuft -
Kindergarten Teacher

My name is Miss Schugt
and I am so excited to be
teaching Kindergarten at
Corpus Christi. I received
my Bachelors degree from
Saint Mary’s College in
Notre Dame Indiana. I love
anything Notre Dame
especially football, and on
Saturdays can be found glued
to the TV no matter what the
outcome. I am originally
from Los Angeles, California
where I taught first grade
and prior to that worked in
special education for two
years.
As an educator I believe I
am the facilitator of
knowledge and follow the
philosophies of John Dewey
where it is believed that
students learn best by
doing. I believe hands on
experience is vital for a
successful classroom. Group
work and cooperative
learning is also important
for the social connections
it provides. I have also
been greatly influenced by
Howard Gardner’s multiple
intelligences. Students
learn in different ways such
as with music, words, and
movement so I believe it is
best to try and incorporate
all those styles into my
teaching.
I am so glad to see the
emphasis placed on reading
at this school. I feel it is
so important to read
everyday. Some of my
favorite children’s books
are the pigeon series by Mo
Willems and Tacky the
Penguin by Helen Lester. By
reading to my students
multiple times a day I hope
to instill a genuine love of
reading that will continue
throughout their life.
As a teacher in a Catholic
school I believe it is
important to begin opening
my students to a
relationship with God. I do
this through prayer, song,
dance, and discussion. I
want to instill in my
students the fact that God
loves them all no matter
what happens and we should
try and live our life that
way.
